Practitioners Have What It Takes To Build A Successful Business

If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything “right” in your practice and still can’t seem to get ahead, you’re not alone. Every holistic practitioner I’ve ever met wrestles with the same three challenges that show up again and again:

  1. Finding enough people to fill their schedule
  2. Making enough money to get ahead of debt
  3. Having enough free time to enjoy life outside the office

In my previous article on balancing People, Money, and Time, I introduced the three phases of business that shape every self-employed practitioner’s journey. Today, we’re going deeper to talk about how to work with those phases instead of constantly reacting to them. And how a small but powerful shift in your online presence can help you automate ways to build your business while alleviating the stress of these challenges.

The Language We Use (and Why It Matters)

When I first started practicing, I couldn’t bring myself to call the people I treated “patients.” My (limiting) belief was that only doctors had patients and I would be misrepresenting myself if I said I had "patients". But “clients” didn’t fit either, because my dad was a counselor and I grew. up with him seeing "clients". So that term sounded too much like what a therapist would use and I wasn't a therapist.

For years I struggled to define what to call the people I helped as well as what to call myself. Was I a healer? A practitioner? A clinician? A teacher? The truth is, what you call yourself and the people you work with shapes how you see yourself, your business and what you offer. This is also true if you are uncomfortable to identify as a business owner or to say “I want to make more money”. Those hesitations trickle into every decision you make.

Learning to speak confidently about your work, your worth, and your value is a mindset shift that sets the stage for everything else in your business.

The Three Phases at Play (All at Once)

Even though I describe them as phases, People, Money, and Time are less of a chronological series of steps in a ladder and more of an overlapping loop.

  • In the People Phase, you’re focused on growth and connection. You want more patients and you love seeing results.

  • In the Money Phase, you’re focused on stability. You want to grow revenue, pay your bills, and plan for the future.

  • In the Time Phase, you’re focused on freedom. You want space for family, creativity, and self-care without losing income or momentum.

Most of us bounce between these constantly, sometimes within the same day. The problem is that the traditional business model ties all three together in a way that limits us. If people equal money, then taking time off feels impossible.

That’s where an online system, one that supports your practice behind the scenes, becomes essential.

The Website Mistake Almost Everyone Makes

When I first started teaching other practitioners, most of them saw their websites as digital business cards: a homepage, an “About Me” page, a “Contact” page, and maybe an online scheduler. The goal was simple; fill the schedule.

That approach is outdated. It’s like owning a smartphone and using it only to check the time.

Your website can do far more. It can attract the right people, offer valuable education, and help you earn income even when you’re not physically seeing patients. The key is learning to turn it into a web platform that works for you 24/7.

How to Turn Your Website Into a Web Platform

Think of your web platform as the digital equivalent of your clinic (physical office space where you see clients): there's a front door with clear signage, waiting room, front desk, treatment rooms, your office, file cabinets, products to sell, phones, computers, et cetera, all in one space. Like your physical space, your web platform is a living system designed to make your people comfortable and help you serve them efficently and effectively.

But your web platform is so much more than that! When used correctly you can;

  1. Create specialized "funnel" pages to attract specific people or conditions you treat. For example, if you work with fibromyalgia, fertility, or pain management, you could dedicate a funnel to each.

  2. Offer valuable resources that address a real problem for that audience (e.g. a short checklist, guide, or mini-class) so that you build a niche-specific list of subscribers who want your expertise.

  3. Engage with your subscribers with an automated and authentic email sequence that builds your "Know, Like & Trust Factor" so they are more likely to buy from you, talk about you and refer to you.

Shifting from a Web SITE to a Web PLATFROM gives you much more control over your business and your livelihood.

Why This Shift Changes Everything

When your platform does its job, it works around the clock, 24/7 without breaks,  complaints or asking for a raise. It builds relationships while you sleep, educates your patients between visits, and can even generate income through digital products or affiliate recommendations.

This doesn’t mean you stop seeing patients. It means you finally have leverage. You stop equating your income with your availability. You stop feeling guilty for taking time off. You start building a business that bends with life instead of breaking under it.

That’s the freedom we’re all craving; the freedom to serve deeply, earn consistently, and still have time for the people and experiences that matter most.
